Holiday Fraud Watch
The holiday season is prime time for scammers, identity thieves, and fraudsters. That means it’s more crucial than ever to practice safe online browsing and shopping habits.
Quick Ways to Protect Your Maps Accounts
- Watch for unexpected messages. Don’t tap links or share info from texts or emails you weren’t expecting.
- Verify who’s contacting you. If someone claims to be from Maps, don’t share your card number, codes, or device access. We never ask for that.
- Use strong, unique passwords. Avoid reusing old logins and keep your PINs and verification codes private.
- Trust your gut. If something feels off, call us directly.
When Shopping Online:
- Stick to trusted retailers. Research unfamiliar sites and look for real reviews before you buy.
- Check for HTTPS. A secure URL and lock icon help protect your info.
- Be skeptical of “too good to be true.” Deep-discount scams surge during the holidays.
- Download apps safely. Use official app stores and review permissions.
- Avoid public Wi-Fi for purchases. Use a secure network or your phone’s hotspot instead.
- Watch for phishing emails. Verify the sender and go directly to the retailer’s website if in doubt.
- Use a credit card for online purchases. It offers stronger fraud protection than a debit card.
And, watch out for these common holiday-season scams:
- Phishing scams: Scammers send emails or texts that look real to trick you into sharing personal information. Skip the links and log in to Maps online banking directly through the app or website.
- Impersonators: If someone calls claiming to be from Maps and pushes for account access or creates a sense of urgency, hang up. We will never pressure you to act fast or share sensitive information.
- Romance and job scams: If an online connection asks for money—no matter how convincing the story—it’s almost always a scam.
- Bitcoin ATMs: Any request to send money through a Bitcoin ATM is a red flag. Legitimate businesses and agencies don’t operate this way.
- Investment pitches: Never take investment advice from strangers online. Even if they seem friendly, they may be trying to cash in on your trust.
